Quiet by the River Test

A thoughtful Hampshire new build that sits lightly on its riverside meadow — as sustainable as it is beautiful.

With one of the UK’s most biodiverse and rare freshwater systems on their doorstep, Carrie and James Dunlop wanted their new home to sit lightly on the edge of the River Test. Conceived with architect Andrew Wells of 3W Architects as two interlocking barns clad in charred larch, the single-storey house is a contemporary take on the local vernacular — honest, considered, and anchored to its verdant meadow.

There is something about a wooden house that creates a sense of quietness and stillness.

I wanted the house to feel timeless and enduring.
