Sustainability is a journey that never ends—it only grows. Like a river, winding through the forest, it changes. Wider. Deeper. Year after year, we find more meaning in its turns, pushing us to do more and use less.
More than 35 years ago, our founders made a promise to honor and protect the Earth—the home we all share—in everything we do. Today, we are as committed to that pledge as ever, and we invite you to join us on our journey.
Our $10 million donation to The Nature Conservancy and its local Indonesian affiliate, Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN), is preserving 54,000 acres of rainforest in East Kalimantan, Borneo.
Covering one percent of the Earth’s surface, the rainforests of Indonesia are home to an astounding amount of vegetation and wildlife—10 percent of the world’s plants, 16 percent of reptiles and amphibians, 17 percent of birds, and 12 percent of mammals, including the pygmy elephant, clouded leopard, and the iconic and critically endangered orangutan.
To put it simply, protecting the biodiversity of this land is critical for the future of our planet.
As the oldest and one of the largest tropical forests on Earth, Borneo acts as a significant carbon sink, absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Reducing carbon dioxide levels helps to stabilize temperatures globally, affecting weather patterns and contributing to fewer extreme weather events around the world. When we conserve lush forests like these, we are helping to mitigate climate change in real, tangible ways.
Our donation ensures the protection of 54,000 acres of virgin rainforest in Borneo, Indonesia—roughly the size of the city of Cleveland, our hometown. It also preserves an additional 54,000 acres of land that are now dedicated to sustainable forestry.
This donation is a meaningful step in our journey of conservation and environmental preservation, one we could not be making without the support of you, our friends and clients. When our founders opened Sohnne in 1986, they made a pledge to never use wood harvested from the rainforest, a promise we have held closely, shared with you, and continued to build on, together.
We have partnered with American Forests, the nation’s oldest conversation organization, since 2017. Together, we have planted hundreds of thousands of trees from coast to coast—growing toward our goal of one million trees in the United States—benefitting water, wildlife, people, and climate.
